Carat refers to the weight of the stone, not its size. Stones with the same carat weight can appear different in size depending on their cut and shape.

Cut describes how a stone is shaped and faceted. A well-cut stone reflects light better, affecting its sparkle, brilliance, and overall appearance.

Refers to the type of metal used in the piece, which affects its durability, color, and overall wear.

Design Inspiration

The 4Cs (Cut, Color Clarity, Carat)

The 4Cs is the universal standard for assessing the quality and value of a diamond, created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the 1940s. The four Cs stand for Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight.

Cut

The cut determines how well the diamond interacts with light, which is the primary factor in its sparkle and brilliance. A well-proportioned, symmetrical, and polished cut will reflect light optimally, creating brilliance (white light reflection), fire (flares of color), and scintillation (flashes of light when moved). This is generally considered the most important of the 4Cs.

Color

Diamond color measures the absence of color in a white diamond. The GIA color scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colorless diamonds are the rarest and most valuable, though diamonds in the near-colorless range (G-J) can still appear white to the naked eye, offering great value.

Clarity

Clarity evaluates the presence of natural imperfections, known as inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). The GIA Clarity Scale has 11 grades, ranging from Flawless (FL) to Included (I1, I2, and I3). Many inclusions are microscopic and not visible without magnification, so an "eye-clean" diamond with a slightly lower clarity grade (like VS or SI) can be a good balance of beauty and value.

Carat

Carat refers to the diamond's weight, not necessarily its size. One metric carat is equal to 200 milligrams. While a higher carat weight typically means a larger and rarer diamond, how big a diamond appears is also significantly impacted by its cut and shape.
